Hinatadocs

Download Hinata

Hinata is a client for your own server. On first launch, the app asks for a server URL. If you don't have a server yet, start with Self-hosting. It takes a Docker Compose file and a few minutes.

The app is one Flutter codebase for six platforms. Screens, data and shortcuts are the same everywhere.

    How to host it

One app, many servers

The Hinata app has no server address built in. The same build connects to your company's server, your club's server or a local test instance, each with its own session. See The apps for the Server Manager.

What each platform can do

Almost everything is the same everywhere. These are the differences:

⚠️ means it works once the system provides something the app can't ship itself. On Linux you need:

  • Staying signed in: a keyring that implements the Secret Service (e.g. GNOME Keyring or KWallet).
  • Playing voice comments: the GStreamer plugin packages.
  • Recording voice comments: PulseAudio and FFmpeg.

If something is missing, the app tells you what. Details and package lists are in The apps.

Why Linux has no push

On mobile and Windows, push is relayed through the Hinata Connect gateway to FCM and WNS. Linux has no equivalent service. Notifications arrive in the app and by e-mail there. You can still change your notification settings. They belong to your account and also apply to your phone.

After you install

  1. Enter your server URL. The app checks that a Hinata server answers before it continues.
  2. Sign in with your credentials or through your operator's single sign-on.
  3. Done. The workspace is the same as on every other device.

Told to update?

When a server requires a newer app version, the app shows a button to the right store. Operators set these links per platform in the admin area, so the button goes to the store you installed from.
